I would listen to a radio program that delved into the paranormal once a week.I heard about ghost, past regression, telekinesis, use of amulets,
During these times when I was listening, I would feel a fearful dark presence. I often experienced nightmares.
During sleep I would suddenly get awakened, but could not move and I would feel the presence of a dark spirit. I think if I were not able to move my big toe, I would not be released from that state of paralysis, and die of “nightmare” or what is called in Filipino, bangungot. "
During those times, I was not prayerful, I was fond of horoscope, going to fortunetellers. I even thought about undergoing hypnosis to regress to know my past life. This desire was bolstered when I heard that even nuns attended one of the seminars conducted by a renown personality in this field of mind power. Fortunetelling, horoscope, telekinesis are all mind power. By the power of the mind, which is actually being aided by the dark forces, for you to believe in this “power” so you would no longer believe in God. The devil also has the power. But God is more powerful. God is omnipresent, omnipotent.
I used to be a believer of superstition which was handed down from generation to generation. There are many superstitious beliefs in the Philippines like: don’t visit a sick if you just came from a funeral, during the wake of a dead relative, place an open scissor with one blade soaked in the water; upon departure for the funeral place the dress/shirt worn by the dead during his ailment on the roof of his house; the ghost of a dead relative will visit you on the third day from burial;by wearing an amulet, you will be protected from harm, and many others. The devil is a great deceiver, he will lead you to believe the superstition so that you will not call on God.
The Roman Catholic Church considers superstition to be sinful in the sense that it denotes a lack of trust in the divine providence of God and, as such, is a violation of the first of the Ten Commandments. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states superstition "in some sense represents a perverse excess of religion" (para. #2110).
The Catechism clearly dispels commonly held preconceptions or misunderstandings about Catholic doctrine relating to superstitious practices:
Superstition is a deviation of religious feeling and of the practices this feeling imposes. It can even affect the worship we offer the true God, e.g., when one attributes an importance in some way magical to certain practices otherwise lawful or necessary. To attribute the efficacy of prayers or of sacramental signs to their mere external performance, apart from the interior dispositions that they demand is to fall into superstition. Cf.
