We had our share of cleansing in the Philippines when we were visited by the typhoon Ondoy, one year to to this day. Hundreds lost their lives and thousands were left homeless.
The Philippnes was caught unprepared by this disaster. Water rose to as high as a three-storey house. Most families in Cainta, Marikina and Pasig had to stay on their roof while waiting for their rescue. My son and his family had to stay in their second floor with only biscuits for them. They were forced to wade a waist-deep flood water with under currents, the following day for fear of another rain and go hungry.
This flood was attributed to heavy, continuous heavy rainfall for hours, exacerbated by the denudation of trees, clogged waterways, shallow rivers because they were not dredged.
